Land Owners versus refugees in PNG
Yesterday on The Wire, we heard that Papua New Guinea was considering revising death penalty laws, prompted by a rise in violent crime. Today we hear about growing tension between refugees and local land owners. Recently, a three year old girl was abducted from her mother’s arms near Bogia and days later, authorities were only able to recover her jaw and skull. The beheading is being attributed to an ongoing inter-ethnic land conflict, which is seeing a resurgence of sorcery practices in the region. The area is home to some fifteen-thousand refugees, who fled a volcano in 2005. Calls are being made for an immediate resettlement of the refugees, to put an end to tensions.
