Australia’s iconic koalas could decline in population numbers as temperatures continue to rise, new research from the University of Sydney shows. The research shows koalas cannot rely solely on eucalyptus trees but instead seek different types of trees to escape high temperatures during the day time.

One quarter of koalas studied died in a 2009 heatwave and temperatures have continued to rise since then. Researchers say the answer lies in further research and the plantation of more trees.
