Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty announced today he will resign from his position on September Second – the thirty fifth anniversary of him become a police officer. Keelty is best known for presiding over the case of terror suspect Dr Mohamed Haneef, who was subsequently cleared of all charges and the actions of the Federal Police in laying the charges were brought into question. This has left a cloud over what could have otherwise been a distinguished career.
