Yesterday on the Wire we heard human rights lawyer Julian Burnside talking about his own personal journey from ordinary lawyer to campaigner for human rights. His new book, “Watching Brief”, is particularly concerned with Australia’s terror legislation and the wide powers it gives police. The laws recently came fully to the attention of the public when Dr Haneef was imprisoned without charge; public opinion was very much for Dr Haneef and against the new laws. But as Julian Burnside told the Wire’s Annie Hastwell, that doesn’t necessarily mean that there is growing uneasiness about the laws.
