Job cuts at Australia Post – is this paving the way for privatisation?

Australia Post has confirmed 900 jobs will be axed this year, with most of the cuts to take place in its head office in Melbourne. Chief executive Ahmed Fahour says administrative, managerial and support roles will be affected. The postal service will also continue to lobby against its Community Service Obligation to deliver standard mail to homes five days a week. There has been a 30 per cent decline in mail delivery over the past 5 years and Mr Fahour says radical reform of the company is needed to keep it economically viable. But experts have said these changes could pave the way for privatisation.
