The nuclear power plant at Daiichi in the Fukushima prefecture in Japan has now had three separate explosions from different reactors. While Japan struggles to deal with the overwhelming damage and loss of life from the earthquake and tsunami that hit on Friday last week, the world’s attention remains fixed on the possibility of a nuclear meltdown at the plant. Experts have repeatedly pointed out that the situation in Japan is very different to the disaster of Chernobyl in 1986, and that current exposure to radioactive material in Japan is low.
