The domestic reaction has been sour; with those opposed saying it is unconstitutional and conflicts with the pacifist values of the country. The move will potentially shift international relations within the Asian security environment, with China raising concern. The Wire’s Kayla Dickeson reports.

Japan’s government has passed new legislation in their lower parliament which would allow a military force to deploy overseas. In the past, Japanese peacekeeping forces have been involved in efforts across Cambodia, Timor Leste and Iraq, but this would add a new element for their military’s capacity unheard of since WWII.
