Experts say the Japan-Australia security agreement is unlikely to affect trade relations between Australia and China but disagree in the wisdom of the policy. The pact aims to bring together the three most powerful democracies in the Asia-Pacific region, with India now a possible newcomer. Indian politics professor Peter Mayer says India is unlikely to enter into the deal because the subcontinent wants independence of action in the international sphere. China expert Feng Chongyi maintains that the agreement is just about strengthening the ties between Japan and Australia and does not concern China either economically or culturally, while Asian politics academic Felix Patrikeeff advises that Australia should not jump into any concrete alliances as flexibility is important in international relations.
