National Sorry Day will be a time for celebration for the Mirrar people – with plans for the day to be marked with an official apology and recognition by the Jabiru Town Council. With wording approved by the Gundjehmi Aboriginal Corporation, the apology acknowledges indigenous Australians as the first people of this land – and recognises the traditional owners of Jabiru, as well as Kakadu and West Arnhem. The statement “apologises unreservedly and sincerely for the pain, grief, and suffering resulting from past laws government policies, actions and attitudes”. Andy Ralph, CEO of Gundjehmi Aboriginal Corporation, representing the Mirrar people, says the apology will be the focus of National Sorry day next week.
