Gender inequality in traditional interpretations of Islam is widely documented and it’s a problem which is deeply rooted in Islamic family law. The lack of women’s rights within this Islamic framework is set to be overhauled by a new generation of Muslim women pushing for reforms to abolish gender discrimination. In this story is Zainah Anwar, who is part of a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family and is in Australia for the Festival of Ideas, which is happening in Adelaide this weekend. She told Tara Egan why perceptions towards gender equality in Islam are changing.
