Is war a part of Australia’s identity?
Today marks the end of World War One, when the Armistice was signed on this day 90 years ago. During the war 60,000 Australians lost their lives. Since then the total number of Australian war deaths has increased to 102 thousand. Armistice Day attracts thousands of Australian’s who attend commemoration services around the country and overseas. While many see this day as honoring and remembering those who have lost their lives, some are concerned about nationalism and militarism creeping into the event. Dr Peter Pedersen is a senior Historian at Australia’s War Memorial in Canberra. He says the Australian soldier embodies the qualities, that today’s Australian’s want.
