Animal activists are calling for scientists to stop the use of non-human primates as laboratory animals and suggest use of alternative technologies. But, for some elements of scientific research the use of laboratory animals is still necessary and the application of the 3R’s strategy – Replacement, Reduction and Refinement – provides a systematic framework to achieve the goal of humane experimental techniques.
