Is Nuclear Power a “Green” Alternative?
The World Energy Congress, described by the Australian Conservation Foundation as the “Olympics of the energy world”, is being held in Sydney this week. And once more there’s talk that nuclear energy should be put back on the agenda, this time from the event’s sponsers, the World Energy Congress. With increasing concern with climate change, nuclear power is being pushed as “greener” than fossil fuels. But is it really? James Courtney, Greenpeace’s Australia & South Pacific Nuclear Spokesperson believes it isn’t. There are increasing problems with the safety of nuclear power in Japan, and Europe, with every country including Australia, the UK and the US facing the difficulties of storing nuclear waste.
