The consumption of sugary, salty and processed foods is preventing access to fresh food in some remote Indigenous communities. That’s the findings of a new study published today in the Medical Journal of Australia that followed the food habits of three remote Aboriginal communities.

The study found that diets in these communities are poor because of the difficulties in accessing fresh food, and as a result many people have diets lacking in essential vitamins like calcium, potassium and fibre. One possible solution to this entrenched problem is to encourage communities to form a greater reliance on bush tucker, which is known to have proven nutritional benefits.
