Is Holocaust denial beyond the boundaries of accepted free speech?
An Australian man is facing up to six years in a German prison for publicly denying the Holocaust. Fredrick Toben, a retired teacher from Adelaide who is an open revisionist of history, was arrested at Heathrow airport last week and is now awaiting trail in Germany. Under the German constitution, denying the Holocaust is a criminal offense despite the fact that freedom of speech is enshrined in Germany’s bill of rights. Mr Toben is a founder of the Adelaide Institute on their website he publishes material to promote his theories. According to Dr Juergen Broehmer, the Internet reaches an international audience which makes it difficult for Mr Toben to challenge the accusations.
