IRATI WANTI – the Federal Government has heeded the call by the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjutas and won’t put the poison into the ground near Woomera in South Australia. The Government has today quit its push for a national nuclear waste dump in the outback, and put the onus back on the states to dispose of waste generated from Hospitals and Universities. While the Government says it backed down because it did not think it could win a High Court appeal against a Federal Court ruling over its forcible acquisition of the site. Kerry Klimm reports on the role a group of senior Aboriginal women based in Coober Pedy played in the backflip.
