Scott Morrison has set off on a diplomatic mission of late, planning to visit Japan and Papua New Guinea in the next week.

The Japan visit will be the Prime Minister’s first international visit since the COVID pandemic began, but the Papua New Guinea visit has been halted in its tracks. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has told Prime Minister Morrison that now wouldn’t be the best time for a diplomatic discussion, as political tensions remain high in the country.

Pat Fordham spoke with UTS’ James Laurenceson from the Australian-Chinese Relations Institute about what the Japan visit means for Australia.
