The Deputy Chairman of Indonesia’s Human Rights Commission says the conflict in West Papua is “a burden on the nation’s history.” Despite protests from the Attorney General’s Office, the Commission has vowed to continue investigating atrocities that allegedly took place in the Indonesian province between 1963 and 2002. Human rights advocates have applauded the move, saying that recognizing the abuses of the past will shed light on the present for Papuans. As recently as last week six Papuans were arrested for flying the Morning Star Flag.
