The 2009 Garma Festival kicked off this afternoon with a spectacular opening ceremony. Garma is one of Australia’s most significant Indigenous cultural exchange events. It’s held at Gulkula, not far from Gove in the Top End, and brings together clan groups from north east Arnhem Land, as well as representatives from Indigenous peoples throughout the country. Students from Australia’s only Indigenous tertiary faculty, the Batchelor Institute are covering the event.
