This shocking figure stubbornly refuses to go down, and for young people the figures are even worse. Greens Senator Rachel Siewart wants PM Malcolm Turnbull to include a justice target in the closing the gap report. But would this make any difference? Simple measures like mandatory notification (to aboriginal advocacy services) have made aboriginal deaths in custody almost disappear, and in the recent death in custody case in Maitland, notification did not happen. Many other programs to engage communities and young people have shown to reduce offending, but these have not been well funded.
