Indigenous Identity in international law
Continuing our series, today we look at Political, Legal, Economic, Social and Cultural Identity, within the United Nations Draft Declaration on the rights of Indigenous People. The concepts of Social and Cultural Identity are easily understood. And Political and Legal Identity are part of self-determination, as discussed in previous weeks. But you wouldn’t be alone if you wondered what the UN statement would have to say about the notion of Economic identity for Indigenous People. Andrea Carmen is a Yaqui Indian, and the Excutive Director of the International Indian Treaty Council. She says economic rights are not only individual rights but collective rights of Indigenous people.
