Indigenous community concerned over ongoing deaths in custody
As we await the trial of Senior Sergent Chris Hurley, in relation to the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee on Palm Island in 2004, a protest in Sydney has highlighted the anniversary of another Indigenous death. 16-year-old TJ Hickey died on Valentines Day in 2004 after what witnesses maintain was a police chase. Protesters from around the country gathered to pay respects to the family and to march in solidarity with the family of Mulrunji Doomadgee. And some 16 years after the handing down of the findings into Aboriginal Black Deaths in Custody, Indigenous residents of Redfern such as Jenny Munro, remain concerned that not enough has been done to protect Indigenous Australians from harm.
