The Minister for Ageing- Justine Elliot- has announced a $46.2 million dollar program for indigenous aged care services in remote communities. Her announcement came on the same day the ABC’s Lateline program broadcast a damning story about the tragic death of Dulcie Brumby at the Docker River aged care centre in the Northern Territory. Ms Brumby suffered dementia and was unsupervised when she fell into a fire. She died the following day. Now questions are being asked about the way remote indigenous aged care homes are monitored, and why the usual national nursing home standards don’t apply.
