The resignation of Liberal MP Alexander Downer means a by-election in the Federal seat of Mayo. The electorate covers almost 10,000 square Kilometres and includes the currently controversial Murray mouth. With Labour deciding not to contest the seat, it’s been left to independents to challenge the Liberal Party. Anthropology professor with a history of involvement in the area Diane Bell has announced she will contest the September 6 by-election with the campaign slogan “Di Bell- Let the river flow”.
