West Papua’s independence has been a point of contention in Indonesia for over five decades, and today tensions escalated after a petition was handed to the UN.
It received almost two million signatures despite being smuggled through villages after it outlawed by the Indonesian government, and has now gained the attention of the international community.
Activists and researchers are lauding the West Papuan’s ability to organise the petition, and protest in a peaceful manner.
