Illegal abortion court case worries doctors
A doctor in New South Wales has been convicted of performing an illegal abortion, the first such conviction in the state in 25 years. Dr Christopher Pearce of the Australian Medical Association says doctors are worried now, and the law is confusing and should be uniform across all states. President of the law Society of SA Deej Eszenyi says it will never be possible to create federal laws covering abortion. President of the Abortion Providers Federation of Australasia says the Dr Sood case is an isolated one and not part of any conservative backlash but it does highlight the fact that the federal government has refused to address the issue of training and regulation for doctors who do terminations.
