South Australian Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi resigned as Parliamentary Secretary to Opposition Leader Tony Abbott this morning after making controversial remarks in the Senate last night.

The ALP’s Marriage Equality Bill was voted down in the House of Representatives today 42 to 98. The result has been disappointing for gay marriage advocates who were hoping the Australian parliament might at last reflect the views of the majority of Australians – who polls consistently show support the idea.
