As the Howard government refuses to alter its strict system of mandatory detention of asylum seekers and introduces new anti-terror legislation, many civil libertarians have argued that human rights are being eroded in Australia. The Public Interest Advocacy Centre – or PIAC, has just launched a kit they hope will rectify this. The kit covers 12 areas of human rights including civil and political rights, age discrimination, health rights and race and religious discrimination. It will soon be distributed via community organisations around the country. Elissar Mukhtar spoke to Dr Patricia Ranald, the Principle Policy Officer of PIAC; Dr Hilary Charlesworth, Director of the Centre for International and Public Law at the Australian National University; and Paula Abood, human rights activist and community development worker.
