Human rights groups urge caution on celebration of Burma’s reforms

There have been celebrations in Burma after Aung San Suu Kyi and her pro-democracy party appeared to have cleaned up in the by-election held yesterday. But experts are cautioning that ex-military officials still hold the vast majority of seats in the parliament, and amid the international praise over the running of this by-election, Amnesty International is warning that human rights violations have in some areas become worse in recent times, defying the trend towards democratic reform.
