The Sri Lankan government succeeded this week in wiping out the rebel force, the Tamil Tigers. It’s being hailed a victory and as liberation for the Tamil people. That’s not how the Tamils themselves see it. Two hundred and fifty thousand Tamils are being held in refugee camps, and there are all sorts of rumours flying around about what is happening in those camps. The Sri Lankan government continues to refuse to allow media or aid agencies in. Dr Sam Pari is campaign organiser for Tamil Australian Youth – she told The Wire that the Australian public isn’t getting a true picture of what is happening at the moment.
