HREOC urges government to combat discriminatory gay and lesbian laws
In June last year, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission released a report on gay and lesbian discrimination. The report, titled “Same Sex: Same Entitlements”, found fifty eight discriminatory laws against the gay and lesbian community. But after taking a closer look at financial and work-related legislation, Australian Human Rights Commissioner, Graeme Innes, noticed there were in fact many other pieces of federal law that also discriminate against people who are gay, lesbian and transgender. Mr Innes is now desperately encouraging the government and the federal attorney general in particular, to change more federal laws and take strong steps to change discriminatory behaviour in Australian society. Gay advocate, Rodney Croome, is also urging the government to change legislation.
