One month ago the Federal Government tabled a report by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission about the mandatory detention of asylum seeking children. The report was scathing to say the least. The most blatant finding was that detaining children is a violation of their human rights and a violation of our international obligations under the UN Rights of the Child covenant. For full details of the report follow the link below. The government quickly dismissed the report, despite it taking many years to complete, with Amanda Vanstone calling it ‘unbalanced’ and ‘backward-looking’. Today on The Wire Human Rights Commissioner Sev Ozdowski speaks out, demanding the government release all children from immigration detention centres and implement the recommendations of his report.
