HREOC concerned about plans to scrap Racial Discrimination Act in NT

The legislation drafted to implement the Federal Government’s Northern Territory intervention plan has been criticised by the human rights commission for sidestepping the Racial Discrimination Act. HREOC has also expressed concerns that the laws banning alcohol could contribute to an increase in the numbers of Indigenous inmates, who already constitute up to 25% of the adult prison population, despite just 3% of our population being Indigenous. The laws are currently before the Senate, which is expected to pass them this week.
