Howard Government response to Indigenous child abuse rolls on
The controversy over how to respond to child abuse in the Northern Territory continues. As you heard on The Wire last week, the Federal Government caused a storm when it declared a state of emergency over the prevalence of sexual abuse in Indigenous Communities in the Northern Territory. The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough said today that around 20 Australian Army personnel are already in Alice Springs. They will provide tents, as well as logistics and communications support for the doctors and police officers who will soon follow. But does all this represent a step back to heavy-handed paternalism? Or is this new initiative the type of serious action required to address the scourge of child abuse?
