The University of New South Wales’ removal of an article last month speaking out against the reduction of human rights in Hong Kong by China was condemned by Federal MPs and members of the public. A tirade of angry messages sent to UNSW’s social media accounts by Chinese students brought to light how intimidation was being used by pro-China nationalists to silence critics of the Chinese Communist Party. UNSW’s decision to remove the article by prominent law academic Elaine Pearson called into question the existence of freedom of speech at the university.
