The actions of a US soldier who killed sixteen Afghan civilians have been characterised as a ‘rogue’ act by US army officials. The nighttime massacre happened on Sunday night near a US base in Kandahar, Southern Afghanistan. After moving from house to house, killing the civilians, nine of whom were children, the soldier turned himself in and remains in custody.

The event raises questions about the psychological motivations behind random acts of violence in warzones.
