Prominent Australian gay and lesbian rights advocates and lobby groups say recent homophobic statements by an expelled Queensland Labor candidate are not indicative of widely-held sentiments behind the scenes of our major political parties.

In fact, the groups say they point to progress, coming as a backlash to widespread and continuing achievements for gay rights.
