Homeless rate rises as groups push for continued funding
New figures released today show that homelessness in Australia has risen by eight per cent since 2006. The Australian Bureau of Statistic (ABS) report revealed that in the south-eastern states of NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, the homelessness rate rose by more than 20 per cent. A large proportion of the rise was attributed to people living in severely crowded dwellings due to the impact of the global financial crisis and the lack of affordable housing.
Groups that provide support to the homeless say that in order for the government to be on track to meet the target of halving the rate of homelessness by 2020, it needs to ensure funding is not taken away from support services.
