Indigenous communities in many parts of Australia are seeking solutions to the challenge of substance abuse, which in some places is threatening to decimate traditional cultures. Likewise, state and territory governments are considering various legislative options to foster change. Last week, the Queensland government introduced home brew bans for two Indigenous communities, to build on the existing Alcohol Management Plans. The Wire takes a deeper look at the two communities which requested the extended bans – speaking to the Manager of the Junkala Laka Justice Group on Mornington Island, Beedie Regford and Aurukun Justice Group member Martha Koowartha, uncovering frustration with the lack of police support.
