The CIA’s controversial intelligence gathering practice dubbed ‘Extraordinary Rendition’ is back firmly in the spotlight with the recent release of the movie ‘Rendition’. First employed in the early 1990s, the procedure involves the secret apprehension and transfer of suspects beyond U.S soil. This allows for tougher forms of interrogation in nations with laxer guidelines on torture than the United States. Suspects are sometimes handed over to foreign agents leading to allegations that the practice was akin to ‘outsourcing torture’.
