The United Nations Secretary General warned this week that Asia could soon be facing an AIDS crisis worse than in sub-Saharan Africa. There are already over seven million people suffering from HIV/AIDS in the Asia-Pacific region, with about one million new cases last year alone. Kofi Annan spoke at the opening of the 15th International AIDS conference in Bangkok this week. Annan says Asian governments need to stop being ashamed of the problem and sticking their heads in the sand – they need to take action now, before it’s too late. Cassandra Hill spoke to Dr Suman Mehta, the Director of UNAIDS’s Asia-Pacific program, who is at the conference, about the challenges facing Thailand in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
