The world’s first census of marine life, unveiled overnight in London, has led to the discovery of more than 6000 new species. But scientists say this may be just the tip of the iceberg. They estimate there are at least 750,000 species which have not yet been discovered. The historic deep sea stocktake took place over a decade and involved research teams in 80 countries, including Australia. The Australian Conservation Foundation is calling on the government to step up its efforts to protect Australian oceans, where 33,000 marine species live.
