It sounds great. Australia ranks third on the UN Standard of Living Index – bettered only by Norway and Sweden. But does this ranking truly reflect what is happening in Australian society? After all, new research shows Australia also has the third highest poverty ranking in developed world. Lin Hatfield Dodds from Uniting Care Australia told Kathryn Crisell-Probst that 86% of the job created in the 1990’s paid under $500 per week, massively increasing the wealth gap in this country. Uniting Care Australia is part of the Vote 1 – No More Poverty campaign which is trying to make Australia’s burgeoning poverty levels an election issue.
