High rates of mental illness among police detainees

There is a growing body of research showing that the odds are against people with mental illnesses. A new report released today shows that almost half the people who are detained by police in watch houses at local police stations across the country have some sort of mental illness.

A growing number of commentators believe the problem of mental illness should be identified at the gateway of the criminal justice system so that people instead could receive treatment in the health system.
