Hicks pleads guilty to aiding terrorists
Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks could be sent home soon, after today agreeing to plead guilty before a United States military tribunal, to a charge of providing material support to terrorists. An agreement on any sentence he will serve that exceeds the five years he’s already been imprisoned, is expected by early tomorrow morning, Australian time. He could be returned to Australia to serve any prison term shortly after that. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has welcomed what he described as “an end to the saga” and has confirmed that Hicks will be able to complete any remaining term of his sentence in an Australian prison. But Greens leader, Senator Bob Brown, rejected any suggestion that this is an end to the saga.
