Heathrow Scare
Overnight, British authorities arrested twenty four people to prevent what they call the biggest terrorist plot since September eleven. UK police say the plot involved blowing up as many as ten planes as they flew from Heathrow airport to the US, at the height of the summer travel season. While details are still sketchy, it’s believed the plotters planned to mix liquid explosives while on board the aircraft. As a result, passengers are being prevented from taking liquids in their carry on luggage in many airports, particularly if flying to the US or UK. There have only been minor delays in Australia, but Heathrow and airports in the United States have suffered major slowdowns. But there’s concern the overnight arrests will worsen existing ethnic and religious tensions in the UK and around the world.Dr Andrew O’Neill, senior lecturer in international studies at Flinders University, explained to Andrew Green why he thinks England is being targeted.
