It was what he promised in the lead up to the 2007 federal election – a national take-over of the health care system. And that’s exactly what Kevin Rudd committed to in the long awaited announcement of Labor’s healthcare reform package today. Central to the proposed reform is a plan to fund health care nationally but administer the delivery through local bodies. State Premiers and Territory Chief Ministers will be asked to agree to a transfer of powers at the next Council of Australian Governments meeting in April – and lose $50 billion from their GST income. So after the lengthy deliberations, has the government got it right?
