Workers have continued to strike in their thousands across China in the last few months, partly in response to a slowing economy. Just as recently as twelve days ago, 900 workers blocked a major tunnel at an iron ore mine in China’s central Shaanxi province. As a younger generation of migrant workers spearhead a push to get a greater share of their country’s wealth, questions are being raised over the role of the government-approved workers union, and the sustainability of China’s low wage model.
