After winning in a landslide Northern Territory election, Lia Finocchiaro and the Country Liberals have announced massive hard-line reforms to the youth justice system, including lowering the age of criminal responsibility, denying bail for repeat and violent offenders, and holding parents partly responsible for the crimes of their children.
This comes after rises in youth violence in the Northern Territory, and calls from the community to make the streets more safe.
Professor Christine Bond, of the Griffith Criminology Institute, is against the reforms, arguing they are a short-term response to community concerns over research evidence.
