Guantanamo Bay installation “the tip of the iceberg”
While the Whitehouse busily defends itself against United Nations calls for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, an article in The New York Times today says it’s one of many prisons dotting the globe. It particular, it reports that the US military has been expanding another, less-visible, but equally pernicious detention centre in Bagram, Afghanistan. In the past, US Defence Department officials have described the facility as a “screening centre”, but this week, the Pentagon’s chief adviser on detainee issues, Charles Stimson, along with other US officials, has remained silent. Katie Wood, campaign co-ordinator at Amnesty International Australia spoke to Sophie Gyles about what we know, and what we don’t know, about the Bagram prison.
